Julie's Story

Julie Roos is an educator in Clark County School District in Southern Nevada. She serves as the District Chair for the Golden Desert Speech & Debate Association, is a Teacher-Consultant for the Southern Nevada Writing Project, and is a past-president of the Southern Nevada Council of Teachers of English. Julie is also a scorer, prompt-developer, and scoring conference staffer for the National Writing Project’s College, Career, and Community Writing Program, helping to verify the efficacy of this program that she has also helped introduce in Southern Nevada.

Julie spent her first 14 years in CCSD at Canyon Springs High School and Leadership & Law Academy, teaching English and Law Magnet courses and serving as an instructional leader. As she transitions to working on the campus of NWCTA, Julie will continue to serve as a Speech & Debate coach at Canyon Springs. Julie believes that every student has a vision to share with the world, and that they are stronger when they do so together, which has led her to coach the Golden Desert World Schools Debate team for the past seven years. World Schools Debate combines students from across Southern Nevada on teams to represent Golden Desert for the National Speech & Debate Association National Tournament, and Julie’s competitors–representing the length and breadth of Clark County’s public and private schools–have had winning records at every Nationals.

Julie is originally from Pittsburgh, PA, where she first began competing in Speech & Debate, a graduate of the Cook Honors College at IUP (BSEd), where she first began attending Writing Project Conferences, and Western Michigan University (MA), where she first taught college composition.
