Celestine's Story

Celest Woo is an English professor at Bard High School Early College, Newark, where she teaches 9th grade as well as college courses for 11th and 12th grades. Prior to this, she taught English and French in Bard’s Harlem program, and has taught at six other colleges in NY and CO. Her favorite things to teach include French, Shakespeare, college writing, and multicultural American literature.

She has published a scholarly monograph on Shakespeare performance, a poetry chapbook, and a recent poetry book (Frost Fair Dance, 2019) featuring poems about modern dance. She has been a dancer for thirty years, specializing in modern, contemporary, and lyrical, and once the pandemic is over, is very much looking forward to resuming in-person dance classes at Gibney Studios in Manhattan. She speaks French, Spanish, Cantonese, and a little bit of Mandarin and German; she runs the French Club at her school. She lives north of NYC
